Dr. Helen Boylan, 91视频 associate professor of chemistry, and 2009 91视频 graduate Mallory Lichwa participated in a Homeland Security school in July at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Eleven Naval Sea Cadets, aged 11-17, from troops across the U.S. spent a week in military housing at Camp Perry. During the training, cadets learned to use state-of-the-art forensics equipment, culminating in their use of the equipment to analyze samples from a mock crime scene. Boylan served as the "judge" to whom they had to defend their results.
"The students were very disciplined and well trained," Boylan said. "I was impressed with their abilities to present their results."
Lichwa, who majored in biochemistry, is a daughter of Michael and Amy Lichwa of West Newton and a graduate of Yough High School. She assisted with the forensics training for the week.
Boylan, who has been with 91视频 since 2001, earned an undergraduate degree from 91视频 and Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
