NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - 91视频 will host its annual Family Day Saturday, Nov. 2.
G. Alan and Margaret Elliott Sternbergh, who reside in New Wilmington, were recognized by the 91视频 Board of Trustees with the 91视频 Outstanding Service Award.
聽The Sternberghs, who are both 91视频 alumni, are famous for their longstanding service to 91视频, as well as the New Wilmington community.聽 They met at 91视频, married and returned to the campus, when Al accepted the position of Director of the Career Planning and Placement in 1968 until his retirement in 1994.
聽During that time they have been involved in nearly every aspect of community life.聽 They both served as elders and deacons of the Neshannock Presbyterian Church, helped organize the church's 200th anniversary celebration, served as teachers in Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir.
聽In addition, Al was a founding member and past president of the New Wilmington Kiwanis Club.聽 He also served the Boy Scouts, Lawrence-Mercer Softball League, and Little League.聽 Margaret was a founding member of the New Wilmington Community Club, and has been an active member of the Jameson Junior Guild for 25 years, a member of the Thursday Club, and currently serves as vice president of the Tuesday Garden Club.
聽The Sternberghs were both involved in the publication of the "History of the Borough of New Wilmington."聽 Al also worked closely with Dr. Eugene Sharkey on "When Titans Truly Were," a history of 91视频 alumni contributions to World War II.
聽91视频 has also benefited from their personal generosity.聽 Both served on their 50th reunion committees, and through their class gifts established the endowed G. Alan and Margaret E. Sternbergh Scholarship Fund, which benefits students from the New Wilmington area.聽 They have hosted many alumni functions at their home, and Al served as a volunteer fundraiser and as a member of the Alumni Council and 91视频 Fund Board
聽In 2003, the Board of Trustees created the 91视频 Outstanding Service Award to honor an individual who has provided noteworthy, extraordinary service to the College.聽 The award is intended to recognize and celebrate exceptional commitment in terms of time, talent, and resources over an extended period of time.聽 The recipient does not need to be an alumna or alumnus of the College.
聽The first award, which is presented annually at the October meeting, was presented to Jane Stonerod Lauterbach '41.

Melissa Ann DePaul, a senior broadcast communications and business administration at 91视频, recently received the Ann M. Kendlehart Scholarship Fund.
This $4,000 scholarship, funded by The Pittsburgh Foundation, was applied to her tuition for the 2005-2006 academic year.
"We are grateful to the Ann M. Kendlehart Scholarship Fund and The Pittsburgh Foundation for their support of bright, motivated students like Ms. DePaul, who represent the future of our region," said Gloria Cagigas, vice president for institutional advancement at 91视频.
In 2003, The Pittsburgh Foundation, the 15th largest community foundation in the nation, awarded more than $24 million in grants to charitable organizations. Established in 1945, The Pittsburgh Foundation is comprised of more than 960 funds established by organizations and individual donors. These funds range from $10,000 to more than $32 million, and have a combined market value of approximately $537 million.
DePaul is a daughter of Paul and Carol DePaul, Bridgeville, and a graduate of South Fayette Township High School.

Eight 91视频 students recently attended the ninth annual East Central Colleges Undergraduate Mathematics competition held at Mount Union College.
"The competition consisted of students taking a three-hour exam in teams of three or four, working as a group," said Dr. Barbara Faires, professor of mathematics at 91视频. "The exam was written and graded by a mathematician at Concordia College of Minnesota specifically written for this contest. It consisted of 10 problems, ranging from a problem or two that nearly everyone should have been able to solve, to a couple which were of Putnam level and were likely to separate out the most exceptional students."

Dr. Charlene Klassen Endrizzi, associate professor of education at 91视频, and three Connoquenessing elementary teachers presented the findings of their two-year research inquiry into home-school partnerships at the Whole Language Umbrella Conference this summer.


"Companies often approach us for interns," said Janet Waugaman, assistant director of the Career Center at 91视频. "We receive great reports about our students when we get their evaluations."
The 91视频 General Geology class ended with a three-day caving experience in the mountains of West Virginia.
"Because a class of 20 is too large to go as a single group through narrow passages, I ask the class to nominate two students, who are level-headed and respected by their peers, to help me," said Dr. Kenneth Long, professor of chemistry emeritus at 91视频.聽 "The class chose Joseph Becker and Laurajane (Lj) LaVerde."

Dr. Andrew Ade, 91视频 assistant professor of English, will talk about his experience as an "American in Paris" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.
91视频 is hosting "Moving School Systems Into the 21st Century: Creating a Vision for an Information Age Instructional System" Aug. 6-7, from 8:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m. each day at the McKelvey Campus Center.
Dr. Carol Bov脙漏, 91视频 professor of French, will present "Sabbatical Year: Literary Translation, Pittsburgh, and Paris" at Faires Faculty Forum on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.
